About Studio Mothers
Whether you’re a professional painter, an unpublished novelist, a collage artist, photographer, or musician, the work you love isn’t a “hobby.” It’s the way you make sense of the world.
Given the challenges of daily life with children, a home, and perhaps a paying job, managing any kind of consistency in your creative work — or even the occasional creative binge — is often elusive. Creativity gets dropped to the bottom of the list, or lopped off altogether.
Understandably, sometimes it feels like combining motherhood and creative work is an impossible proposition.
Of course it’s not impossible — just difficult, at times. For me and many others, turning dreams into reality is easier with a group of supportive friends watching your back. We benefit from a network of women who share similar challenges and success. Checking in regularly, and seeing the progress that others are making, is inspirational food for the creative soul. To facilitate those truths, I started this blog in January 2008 to support my fellow creatives.
During a collection of major life transitions, I took a two-year hiatus from the blog. In June 2017, I brushed off the dust and restarted this little gem. We still have 16,000+ e-mail subscribers!
I’m a certified creativity coach, writer and editor, and mother of five children ages 27 through 9. (My oldest son, Russell, is a professional musician, as is my next oldest, Matthew.) My short e-book, written specifically for creative mothers with young children, is available here.
In 2017, my life-design workbook, Life By Design: 52 Lists, Questions, and Inspirations for Finding Your Happiness, was published by Castle Point Books, an imprint of St. Martin’s Press. Built on a framework of design thinking, Life By Design is a practical workbook that guides you through applying principles of design to intentional life choices. From career to love to extracurricular pursuits, the exercises in this book help you decide how to innovate and iterate your way to a well-lived life.
This illustrated journal was followed by The Power of Quiet: An Inspirational Journal for Introverts, and Press Pause: A Journal for Self-Care, Intention, and Slowing Down.
All creatives are welcome here. A number of our community members are non-mamas — and even male! Don’t forget to join in the Studio Mothers fun at Facebook.
Warm regards,
Miranda Hersey
PS: In our earlier days, this blog was known as “Creative Construction.” So you may see references to that name in older posts.
I just found this site and I am excited about exploring it more!
great! welcome, dee!
thank you, Miranda! so nice to be here. and welcome, Dee!
So glad I found your site. Sounds like a wonderful place to get connected with other artistic moms. Thanks so much. Look forward to reading and learning more about “Studio Mothers.”
I love this and I will be visiting more often! Thank you for blogging. I hope you can take the time and read my blog if possible. I created the blog about a month ago and I relate so much to what you wrote about being a creative mom how our creativity gets put at the bottom of the list! I always try to use what I believe to be my creative talents on a day to day basis.. as a tool to keep myself sane and to show my son that things don’t always have to be so glum and boring!

Life is beautiful and we must live it to the max!

I have just discovered this blog too, via someone (?) on twitter. Now following too and will hopefully have time to read often. I am always trying to find more time to balance my creativity with mommyhood, work, home duties, etc. Going to go channel some of that spark into Valentines now 🙂

I just came across your site today-at the very time I am having lots of conflict regarding…being a mother plus taking a class, painting, wanting to open an Etsy store…It’s wonderful to be able to get support and inspiration from other working creative moms. Thanks! Soraya
Am thrilled that searching brought me to this site! I am excited to share, read stories, and grow amongst all these wonderful women (and men!) who are growing through creativity and parenting!
Welcome, new friends!
Don’t be shy about submitting a post to Studio Mothers — you’re welcome to cross-post something related to motherhood and creativity that you already posted at your own blog or elsewhere — just send us an e-mail (see link under “How to Join” at top of right sidebar).
This is right up my alley! I just started http://www.theroommom.wordpress.com, so I could post all of the different crafty things I do with my kids as well as share great books we read together (and keep up with my teaching job).

Love the concept of this blog! I’m looking forward to reading about how other mothers balance keep their creativity alive! I can tell that I am going to get a lot of inspiration from all of you.
Thank you for following me on twitter 😉
We look forward to hearing more from you, Meeks — thanks for the kind comment!
I just found this site, and I love the premise, voices and spirit. Creativity is so important, and I love how this supports those visions held by the ultimate creators – mothers.
Thank you so much, Ali!
I’m thrilled to have stumbled on this blog! It looks terrific and right in line with what I’m trying to do as a professional artist and mother of 7. Quite a juggle:) We mama’s need all the support we can get, especially the ever delicate balance of work and play. Looking forward to learning more…
Great to see you here, Jessica!
i am pleased to have found this site. i just began painting, and have been trying to find the best brushes for projects. do you have any suggestions?
Thanks for stopping by! The right brushes depend so much on the medium you’re using and what you’re trying to accomplish (as well as your budget). I recommend a trip to your local art store to talk to a knowledgeable salesperson about what you’re looking for.
I’m excited I found you guys! I’m a mother of two and just started a home organization business. I’m looking forward to your posts!
~Erin
So glad to see you here, Erin! Thanks for commenting — and best wishes!
Oh, this blog is sooo me. I think I’ve found a home here and am definitely following. How I wish I could be on your list but I’m one of those already squeezing in those niches of time everyday. Also, I have been reclaiming the artist in me seriously for only about three months so I consider myself just a wanna-be right now, still in the crawling stages—pun intended.
I look forward to the jolts you will inspire.
Peace,
Alexandria
Wonderful, Alexandria — when you have time, do come back and let us know how things are going — in general, and with Aunt Zelda ;-). xo
Hi! We’re not mothers, but we love your blog! We recently started a site with a similar message of freedom and self-expression. It’s great to find like-minded people out there.
Thank you for saying so, League of Champions! You’re doing excellent work 😀
I have nominated you for Very Inspirational Blogger award http://theblumen-artgallery.com/
Many thanks, theblumenartgallery! 😀

Hi! I have nominated you for a Versatile Blogger Award! Please read about it here: http://christinadesignsart.wordpress.com/2012/08/09/versatile-blogger-award/
Happy to have found your blog. The NaNoWriMo got me in, and I’m here to stay :-). I try to write and some days ‘life’ just gets in the way, but this gives me new inspiration (might mean I’m not reading many other blogs for the rest of the month!). Thanks again, Faye
How did it go with NaNoWriNo, Being Mum? 🙂
Hi Miranda,
Well I got to 32000 words, so not quite the 50k but still I was pleased with my first attempt in between looking after the little man and the big man fully into Ironman training! I’m now aiming to get my young adult fiction book finished by my wedding – 30 March as I have 2 nieces from the UK coming over who are avid readers and I thought they’d be good critiques :-).
I love your blog, it gives me lots to think about (and wishing I had more time!)
Happy New Year!
Faye 🙂
Bravo, Faye! That is a *huge* accomplishment! Well done, you 😀
I nominated you for a super sweet blog award. You can see details here http://ahecticlife.wordpress.com/2012/11/27/super-sweet-blogging-award
What a beautiful concept for a blog. Count me in as yet another avid reader – you have me hooked already!
Thank you so much, Sindhuja! 🙂
Great blog!! As a mom, a full time worker, as well as a full time student who loves to write, paint, and explore my creative side. Never seems like enough time to do it all. Looking forward to following your posts!!!
Wonderful to have you here, heart! xo
I thing the idea of this blog is great! I am also a mom with creative ideas and I am glad to find this blog.
I am very happy that I stumbled across this blog. I am a single mother of two and dabble in pretty much any creative persuit I can sink my teeth in. I write, I paint, I do wood and stone carvings, and will be trying my hand at pottery soon. I believe that being creative helps me to keep my sanity.
Wonderful, Teresa! How are things going?
what an awesome idea – excited to check out your site more.
This site is perfect for me right now in my life, and my toddler daughter. I am eager to search some more. I love pottery, writing, reading, crafts, photography and basic sewing. I am new to blogging and am enjoying the community and opportunity to express myself. Your site is a motivation and inspiration boost. Love it!
Thank you so much, dbubble! Wonderful to have you here.
This is a wonderful blog. I wish it was around when I had my babies. Creativity can be key to saving sanity and well being in my opinion.
Quite right, crafty!
I just found this site, too. I’m finally at a place in my life where I feel the courage to truly try to push myself as an artist yet I’m also feeling a ‘baby freakout’! The timing is terrible and seems impossible. I’ll be 38 soon and my boyfriend has no interest in more kids (he has 2 from a previous marriage- they are grown). I thought I was okay with not having kids and have been feeling fired up to make this big life transition (quitting my corporate day job and going for it with making art the focus of my life). I almost wonder if it’s not self-sabotage, yet I’ve been crying my eyes out. I just don’t see how it’s possible. I’m glad to see you have created this blog because women-creatives need this support.
What a difficult place, Julie. My heart goes out to you. I’m sure you already know (at least intellectually) that many, many women have fabulously satisfying lives without kids. And when you do have a few of them, it’s hard not to see all of the amazing things that your childless counterparts are doing — enjoying major creative successes, traveling, living with freedom. Maybe it’s just a grass-is-always greener thing that is part of the human condition. If I can be of any help, or even just a sounding board, feel free to e-mail me at miranda (at) mirandahersey (dot) com. xo
Thanks much, Miranda. Definitely feeling the need for support right now!
I’m a single parent who has been trying to make a little time for creative cooking and photography. It’s not easy but so worth it. Thanks for the setting up this site. I’m at http://www.theflashcook.com. Will be returning.
Thanks for commenting, Claudia! Your blog is lovely.
Hi. I am putting you up for a Versatile Blogger award. You can find out more at my blog. Congrats to you and please keep the excellent posts coming.

I am also an artist and a mom (11, 8, 4) trying to juggle both 🙂
Ill continue following you !!!
Gala
Great to hear from you, Gala! Best wishes for your creative journey. xo

Thank you so much for this! I stumbled upon it as I’m preparing an exhibition of collaborative work with my five year old. Heck, I figure she would just come into my studio and scribble over everything anyway. Just wanted to say thanks so much for this resource.
JJ
How are things going, JJ? 😀
Hi!!!
I’m a stay home mom of an 8 months baby girl and at the same time I’m trying to draw again and I just found your blog!! You are amazing! I’m so glad I found you!!
Great to have you here, ritavegas!
What a wonderful blog!!! It’s just so wonderful to see people helping other people. 🙂 Love it!!!
Thank you so much, Reinvigorate! xo
Hi, I am so excited to have found your site. It is great to know that there are other mothers who struggle to balance their lives with obligation to their kids and husbands/partners. Trying to find time for themselves is a challenge. I started blogging a year ago and I love it! I aspire to be a writer and need all the help I can get. My goal is to be a great communicator one that positively changes a person’s life. I look forward to following. Have a wonderful day, Allie.
Great to hear from you, Allie! Come back and give our Monday Post a try 😀
I’m checking it out. Have a fab day!
This site is a GEM! So excited I stumbled across it! I am a happy Mom to a handsome 19 month old boy. He surprises and amazes me everyday. Creativity is very important to us, but as a first time Mom it’s hard to know what to do and how to do it. After reading only a couple of your post I can tell this will become one of my favorite blogs fast! Thank You for sharing!
Thank you so much, Erin! Great to have you here 😀
I really like your site-what a kind idea to all creative moms.
Thank you, Sophie! xo
wow! I just stumbled across it and its a great idea! I am a single mother and an artist. Ive just started my own business in sewing alterations and dressmaking and I also home educate my kids. Id love any tips and advice 🙂
Thanks for stopping by, ashanti! (I bow down to homeschoolers and unschoolers.) For some of our favorites, try the sliding articles at the top of the home page. And if you ever have a specific issue or question, feel free to post it at our facebook outpost! 😀
Thank you so much. I will do. I look forward to reading more of your posts. 🙂
I ‘just happened’ to. Find you on Pintrest (everything has a reason or can be an inspiration or better yet, both,) I also “look for it.” I have a working studio at home with no pretences. My creative interests take me into varied mediums, Right now I am painting reverse on old wheathered windows suspended by old chain.I see the windows everywhere however I’ve had them a LONG TIME.Hope to create”a little SaS
Thank you so much, Sassy! 😀
Very inspiring blog…
I wrote and illustrated two children’s books which were published in my twenties – then became a single working mom and somehow two decades slipped by. I have decided it is time to get back on the bike. The 20th Anniversary Edition of Long Live Earth is now available for pre-order (10% of proceeds to go to 350.org – working hard to solve the climate crisis).
I hope you might take a peek… feedback most welcomed!
http://www.meighanmorrison.com
Fabulous, Meighan! So glad you’ve decided to start pedaling that bike again — wonderful to have you here.
I have just found this blog and as a mother of 2 children (one with ADHD and one with Autism) I have ignored my creative voice for many years now in an attempt to put their needs first. I am so happy to have recently re-discovered my creative side but it is a daily battle against everything you speak of in your blog. However, you have lifted my spirit and re-inspired me! I have just begun a new journey as a facepainter and have started a blog of my attempts to move from beginner to professional (but suspect it will develop into so much more as the artist within me fights to be seen and heard). So thank you. What a lovely start to my day to have found this blog and so many other creative Mums.
I love a quote and find they can be both inspiring and powerful so here is a simple one I tell myself when doubt creeps in and fear holds me back….
“Leap and the net shall appear…”
Maz.
Yay for you, mazmeekcoms! I love that quote — and I especially love a twist on that quote from poet Maya Stein: “The leap IS the net.” Isn’t that awesome?
Looking forward to hearing more from you! xo
Having blundered onto this site you are stuck with me. I stopped writing to rear my children and am now back focusing all my spare time to being creative so I understand where so many of you are coming from. Great site.
And we’re delighted to have you, Maria! Warmest wishes! xo
It’s always so fantastic when you realize that you’re not alone in the thick of it!!! Before I saw the trailer for Lost in Living I struggled, suppressing my need, my constant sense of urgency to make art, because i knew of no other moms that shared my innate NEED to make art…and so i continued in my silence… “lost in living”….a tired mother. i stumbled on this site just today and love the idea of being part of a circle of moms who know how i FEEL! i look forward to having a virtual back up team when i’m in the midst of a mommy breakdown and haven’t made art in weeks! THANK YOU! 🙂
It’s so wonderful to have you here, Christina!! Come back and let us know how things are going….the Monday Post is an especially useful way to stay in touch. xoxo
Oh dear. I can already tell, I’m going to be obsessed with you guys. I mean that in the healthiest form of obsession possible, if that exists! [: Everything about this site screams “amazing-ness and possibilities!” I love it! I look forward to learning more about you guys! [:
We’re delighted to be obsessed over, Jasmine! Welcome — and don’t be a stranger! 😀
thrilled to find you! i think i have found the pod & many like peas!
Glad to have you in the pod, melibelle!
This is just the community I’ve been looking for! So excited to read and learn more.
Great to have you here, birdstring!
A friend just passed your site on to me and I’m so happy to have found it! I’m excited to join the community and explore. I am also just at the beginning of a Kickstarter campaign for my first children’s book, and this community might find it of interest! I’ve been working through all the issues related to making time for art and self with a new baby and after three years have completed this project. It contains brightly colored collages and sweet rhymes about adventure and the months of the year. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1464632193/where-are-you-going-little-one?ref=email
Great to see you here, Bryanna — very best wishes for a successful campaign!
Confession: I nearly shed a tear when I found this website. My fiance and I have struck out on the Big Quest to build our own life and family, and since we’re both extremely creative, adventurous people, one of the things that terrifies me is the thought of that ending when we add to our little family. Even NOW it’s difficult to manage sometimes.
I’m really looking forward to speaking with like-minded folks and throwing those fears to the ground. ❤
So glad you found us, Bee! We’re here to help however we can xo
Bree, it’s not the end of creativity, you just have to be creative with your time. It’s hard, but it’s worth it. 🙂 Been there, seriously.
Wow this is a fabulous concept and blog. I am a writer just coming out of hibernation. I’ve started a blog to get my creativity really rolling, but this is just perfect. Thank you!
Wonderful to have you here, Michelle!
Wow, this is an awesome blog!!! Creativity is the key to reach your dreams! Congratulations!!
Thank you! 😀
aww. I just found your site. I just started blogging. I am also a mom, a creative, and recent BFA grad. I will certainly be following.
How are things going, craftymomma? Join us at the Monday Post if you’re inspired!
Things are good. Had a rough patch due to finances. But I was hired on through my alma mater as a teacher for youth ceramics. Not many hours but it is a great start. I will have to update about it. Thank you.
hi! glad i found you. sahm with no time energy or motivation … trying to find time energy and motivation. 🙂
Well just *looking* at your avatar gave me a little energy boost! 😉 How did your summer go, DoubleEspresso?
I agree with the need to create. I just recently started a blog about my creative journey in between parenting, work, family and friends. I hope it will inspire all who read it.
I have just found your website and love it, wonderful and so inspiring – I can’t wait to read more. I am new to blogging, having started my blog about making fun crafts with my young son so it is great to be in touch with others – your site will really motivate me. Becky http://www.pebbleandscribble.com
Good for you, Becky! Your blog is an awesome resource. How are things going?
So excited to find this blog. Thank you. Am trying to add more creativity to my families everyday life. I was an art teacher for many years and since marrying and moving countries and having children it seems, like most I am sure that art took a back seat. . . Even though I love it so much, it makes me immensely happy!! I hope to use this site and other resources to integrate creativity readily into our daily lives.
Have recently started to try and make art and creativity part of our families everyday life. I was an art teacher for many years before getting married, moving countries and starting a family, cooking became my only creative outlet but after a few creative tasks here and there I have begun to remember how important art and creativity is to me and hope to instil that in my own children! Hopefully with a bit of help from this site it can become a reality.
Thank you Miranda
Lovely, mishmosh! Looking forward to hearing more from you! xi
Studio Mothers is such a beneficial blog. I wish this kind of support had been available when my son was a child.
Although my son is grown, and I worked outside of the home as a teacher, I always had the yearning to create. I worked in many mediums whenever I could squeeze it in. It is important to find time to create. It feeds the soul. I recently started a blog to share ideas on inspiration and creativity. saltairandpistachios.com
Thank you for your comment, Barbara! And your blog is lovely. Wonderful to have you here 🙂
Hi Miranda! I absolutely love your blog! If you are interested there is a new start up called Tivamo. You can make some money and donate to your favorite charity. Let me know if you are interested! So glad I found this site. I’m a fine artist who is just recovering from motherhood. Kids back to school, no regular job and trying to find my mojo.
Good for you, Debra! I love that concept…. recovery from motherhood 🙂
I love this blog. It has really helped push me to make time for my own creativity among all the craziness of mommy-hood and for that reason I’ve nominated you for the Very Inspiring Blogger Award.
Thank you, Katie!
What a lovely blog to happen upon! I’m looking forward to following and learning from this vibrant community of creatives.
Lovely to hear from you, Danielle! xo

Hi, I have also come to this blog for the first time and loved it and has all to do with me: I’m the mother of two lovely girls – aged 3 and 15 – love to write, especially poetry, drawing and sewing. I have recently started a new venture which is to work from home and try to live from my creativity so maybe we can help each other out? 🙂
I wouldn’t mind to put a link to your website/blog on my website as well; would you like me to?
I will be following your blog and look for more wonderful and insightful things to read.
Wish you all the best,

I just found this blog. What an inspiring blog ! I am a woodcarver and love the idea of a community of “creative” moms.
Oh, I love this inspiration! Thank you for creating this space for those of us attempting to get started on a life of creativity (even at age 41).
https://micbab.wordpress.com/
I really like this blog. I am a working mom, trying to balance life duties, career, and I am aspiring writer. This blog will be very useful to me.
I am so excited to explore this more! New mom, just moved to a new city, and I’m determined not to let my creative endeavors suffer. Thank you for what you do! I’m looking forward to learning more about what it is to be a “creativity coach.” Love that title!
I just found this blog, reading the section about I thought it was about me 🙂 I’m also writing a blog (in Lithuanian) about being with children in a creative way, so I’ll stop here sometimes to read more and more. Thank You 🙂 It is inspiring!
Congrats Your blog has made an impression on me and so you have been nominated for the Blogger Recognition Award. Please take a look at my latest post for more information:
Thank you and have a blessed day 🙂
Hi there! Just found your blog! I’m an illustrator/artist from Portland OR and mom to two sweet kids. I find it difficult sometimes to make time for my art so I’m excited to find inspiration on your blog and meet other artist moms in this community!
Hello. I am an unpublished writer who stumbled onto to your blog. I hope its okay for me to follow you since I am not a mom. Thanks
thelonelyauthorblog
Hi Miranda. Thank you for this wonderful blog! No doubt that you have heard this before (maybe not these words exactly) but you are the first person that I have come across that is rowing in the dream boat which I am still trying to build. I can’t lie but it constantly feels as though the tide is too high but I have always put it down to having to do it on my own and unfortunately I never seem to know where to start which is sort of why I had started my first ever blog a couple of days ago. I had started writing a book a few years ago about how life experiences had morphed me into what I call a Brown Brit but unfortunately my self-belief often makes me stop writing, yet I will happily craft until the cows come home and nothing can obstruct that unless it’s a new idea. I guess I am hoping you may have the guidance which I have been desperately needing. Thanks for reading and much love xx
Absolutely love this site! I have been wired with tons of artistic outlets I love to enjoy, but just don’t have the time to. From playing the piano, painting, crafts to cooking and I just picked up sewing, I’m glad I found this community of people to help me to act on my inspirations!
Hey there Miranda,
I’m working on casting a docu-series about families and the next generation of America with Left/Right Inc. and A&E Networks. Would love to represent some beautiful artistic families with the project. If you’re interested in helping us spread the word, (or if anyone here is interested in participating) give me a shout through e-mail at gen100@thehousethatcastingbuilt.com.
Thanks!
