Your Creative Intentions: The Monday Post ~ March 30, 2015

A regular creative practice — a daily practice, if possible — is key to staying in touch with how you make meaning. Key to living, not postponing. (Let’s all agree to give up on “someday.”)

What are your plans for creative practice this week? Given the specifics of your schedule, decide on a realistic intention or practice plan — and ink that time in your calendar. The scheduling part is important, because as you know, if you try to “fit it in” around the edges, it generally won’t happen. An intention as simple as “I will write for 20 minutes every morning after breakfast” or “I will sketch a new still life on Wednesday evening” is what it’s all about. If appropriate, use time estimates to containerize your task, which can make a daunting project feel more accessible.

    Hi All, after my child was sick missing two days of school last week i immediately came down with a 101 fever so was laid up mid week but got two drawings finished and framed. the drawings are small and can be worked on in bed. ala Matisse style! My child also took a day from my art making with his participation in representing his school at the state finals of the National geographic bee on friday. so had to travel for that. I am thankful he is not going to nationals and take more of my art time!! haha he doesn’t deserve to win as he doesn’t study and plays video games all day, just a natural smarty pants, but natural smarty pants just gets you so far…

    so this week
    catch up on chores
    really get exhibit card ordered… missing so many opportunities to pass them out…
    draw and frame, title and photograph as I go
    walk at least twice for an hour in the woods ( hey maybe draw there)

  3. I agree with the consistency aspect of this. Really motivating! 🙂 I do, however, have an issue with the specific scheduling of time. As a mother of a newborn, I can’t find time to brush my hair most days. Everything happens “around the edges” these days for me! Lol Any suggestions on how to motivate yourself to fulfill your creative promise to yourself when time is so scarce?

    • Devon, when you have a newborn, all bets are off. The best you can do is have a target. For example, “write one page before noon.” If that happens, wonderful. And if it doesn’t, there’s no self-flagellation. These are precious days and you don’t want to muddy them up with unmet expectations. You’ll have a more predictable scheduled before you know it! (And congratulations!)

  5. My son’s pertussis test came back negative, but he’s going on three weeks of coughing….something has a good grip on him, that’s for sure.

    Last week was a total wash as our house went on the market and all was a flurry of repeated stagings and decamping, etc. We’re having a third showing at the moment so hoping there won’t be too much more time lost to this project. My client billables are taking a major hit. As I write this I’m sitting in the parking lot outside Starbucks, connected to my iPhone’s hotspot, while my dog complains in the back.

    Between the house and spring break, I’m keeping my bar set VERY LOW right now. If anything extra happens in the creative department, that will be a bonus.

    Last week’s intentions:
    * Daily journaling [mostly — missed a few]
    * Following No S Diet & IF [fell off wagon but climbed back on]
    * Lots of reading [yes]
    * Exercise at least 5x (walk or yoga) [yes]
    * One writing session [no]

    This week:
    * Daily journaling
    * Following No S Diet & IF
    * Lots of reading
    * Exercise at least 5x (walk or yoga)

  6. This really helps me focus. Life is really throwing stiff at me at the moment but I’m trying really hard to keep at the writing. It’s funny though – sometimes I want to write in different ways. For months there it was all my novel, whereas (probably not surprisingly) it’s my personal blog and journal…. but the novel also takes me out of myself. I will make a list now and then it’s going public!
    Write another chapter by Tuesday.
    Sort out my blogs for possible book opportunity
    Write and update my children’s diaries (I have written them every 3 months since they were born – will give them their life story when they’re 18)

    And I;m going to allow myself 3 House of Cards episodes just because I’m sick!
