Your Creative Intentions: The Monday Post ~ September 22, 2014

Natalie Goldberg quoteA regular creative practice — a daily practice, if possible — is key to staying in touch with how you make meaning. Key to living, not postponing. (Let’s all agree to give up on “someday.”)

What are your plans for creative practice this week? Given the specifics of your schedule, decide on a realistic intention or practice plan — and ink that time in your calendar. The scheduling part is important, because as you know, if you try to “fit it in” around the edges, it generally won’t happen. An intention as simple as “I will write for 20 minutes every morning after breakfast” or “I will sketch a new still life on Wednesday evening” is what it’s all about. If appropriate, use time estimates to containerize your task, which can make a daunting project feel more accessible.

Share your intentions or goals as a comment to this post, and let us know how things went with your creative plans for last week, if you posted to last week’s Monday Post. We use a broad brush in defining creativity, so don’t be shy. We also often include well-being practices that support creativity, such as exercise and journaling.

Putting your intentions on “paper” helps you get clear on what you want to do — and sharing those intentions with this community leverages the motivation of an accountability group. Join us!

  1. I am painting my studio floor! Started yesterday and hope to finish today except for touch ups. The moving and cleaning before starting takes a while, but so far so good.

    • So cool! Will you share a photo when you’re done??

      September 22, 2014
      • Yes, a before and after. I hope the “after” will be this Friday!

  2. Had a good week in terms of being more focused and getting my work done. I also kicked butt all weekend, sorting out and cleaning our garages as well as our one storage area under the stairs. (I have no attic or basement in my new house, so it’s all about minimalism–and the lack of storage space turns out to be a blessing.)

    This weekend I’m going to visit my daughter at college in Boulder, CO, and I can’t wait!! And I’ll use the travel time to my creative advantage.

    Last week’s intentions:
    * Daily journaling [yes]

    * Writing blocks x2 [no]
    * Evening reading [yes]

    hi all,
    seems I am enjoying the yoga and have gone twice a week as intended
    so for this week
    go to yoga twice
    practice tai chi warm up excersizes Daily
    draw on crumpled paper drawings (have five started, one is complete)

    last week i did not start the office painting… and I ate a donut on Sunday! almost made a donut free week.
    not sure I will get to it this week, the office, it is so disrupted by life , my week that is. Monday was renew drivers license and inspection for the car..
    my birthday tomorrow, husband staying home from work
    kids off from school Thursday, braces will be placed on eldest that day
    that leaves Friday for me and projects which I find hard to start on fridays
    so maybe I will try to frame up a crumpled paper drawing Friday
    for a show called Monsters and Mayhem , it may fit the theme…

    I’m blogging every day this week (well, I started on Tuesday, but still…) to give my poor neglected blog a nice fresh start!

    September 24, 2014
    • Nice! How’d it go?

      September 29, 2014
      • I didn’t post every day but every day I either worked on my blog’s social network, read and reacted on other blogs and also wrote a lot of drafts/ideas, besides three or four blog posts. I’m really enjoying “doing something for the blog” on a daily basis. Now we’ll have to see if I can keep that up when my due date gets closer and when baby is here (due late october)…
