Your Creative Intentions: The Monday Post ~ July 29, 2013

Flaubert quote

Commit to a regular creativity practice. Regularity — a daily practice, if possible — is key to staying in touch with how you make meaning.

What are your plans for creative practice this week? Given the specifics of your schedule, decide on a realistic intention or practice plan — and ink that time in your calendar. The scheduling part is important, because as you know, if you try to “fit it in” around the edges, it generally won’t happen. An intention as simple as “I will write for 20 minutes every morning after breakfast” or “I will sketch a new still life on Wednesday evening” is what it’s all about. If appropriate, use time estimates to containerize your task, which can make a daunting project feel more accessible.

Share your intentions or goals as a comment to this post, and let us know how things went with your creative plans for last week, if you posted to last week’s Monday Post. We use a broad brush in defining creativity, so don’t be shy. We also often include well-being practices that support creativity, such as exercise and journaling.

Putting your intentions on “paper” helps you get clear on what you want to do — and sharing those intentions with this community leverages the motivation of an accountability group. Join us!

  1. I love this idea and should start participating as being more creative is a goal of mine. I want to create more authentically and less guarded … this week’s goal is to try and come up with new, creative blog posts this week.

  2. I’m leaving a comment this week.

I will finish rough-outlining my ms by the end of Wednesday. I will write 500 words per day starting on Thursday of my ms. Despite my crazy deadlines, and if fact because this will be the only thing keeping me sane during my crazy deadlines.

    • Bravo, Heather! Are you able to target a specific time of day for your 500 words? For me, if I don’t get them done first thing in the morning I often find myself doing them half-asleep last thing before I go to bed (not ideal). This summer I’ve found myself doing that bedtime-word-scrounge more often than I’d like…..

  3. hm, i skipped last week…i have been committing time to working on my latest manuscript, researching how to go about financing self-pub of prior one and taking moments to write a little something else and taking pictures. also made creative time WITH toots. painting, markering, hula hooping, dancing…

this week’s goals: i have some business to catch up on besides creative endeavors, but setting aside tomorrow for manuscript block. started on twitter again, plan to mostly use for spying on eldest, and posting haiku.continue gardening, taking care of myself via PT. recommit to morning pages, low stress variety. more travels this weekend. never seems to end.

  4. I’m new to this process, but think it is a great idea.

This week, I am going to spend an hour working on a project life page for an upcoming blog post. I also have four scrap pages to do for my creative teams. I will spend 20 minutes MW&F writing and working on some new poetry.

    • Wonderful, Kimberlee! I’m waaaaaaaayyyyy behind on Project Life myself….. :-/

  5. Second week of vacation: Partially polished a new scene in WIP; feels strange not to maintain my daily quota, however. Vacation with the family is awesome, but the nerd in me misses her creative routines…..

  6. You know, I am not a mother (and I am highly unlikely to become one), but can I too take part? This week (although it is Tuesday afternoon already!) I plan to make three final illustrations for cards.

    • Absolutely, NGZG! We often have non-mama women and non-father men join us — the more the merrier!
