Monday Post ~ January 2, 2012

“In this dark and wounded society, writing can give you the pleasures of the woodpecker, of hollowing out a hole in a tree where you can build your nest and say, ‘This is my niche, this is where I live now, this is where I belong.’ And the niche may be small and dark, but at last you will finally know what you are doing.” ~Anne Lamott

It’s a brand-new year, which makes for a wonderful reason to pick NOW as the moment to develop your regular creativity practice. Regularity — a daily practice, if at all possible — is key.

So what are your plans for creative practice this week? Given the specifics of your schedule, decide on a realistic goal or a milestone to reach for — and plan that time in your calendar. A goal as simple as “I will be creative for 10 minutes every day” or “I will gesso three canvases on Wednesday” is what it’s all about.

Share your goal(s) as a comment to this post, and let us know how things went with your creative plans for last week, if you posted to last week’s Monday Post.

  1. I’m starting off this new year feeling pretty positive! Here are my plans for this week:

    Treadmill time, 4x this week
A “kids are back in school, I’m taking some time for myself” trip to the museum and a yarn shop on Tuesday
Work on the torch, at least 2x this week
Stay calm and carry on, daily
Write a blog post for Studio Mothers and Medieval Glassworker by Saturday

  2. 2 weeks ago (and a little of last week):

hahaha – cookies, i hope. have sick kid, job, and two more kids who will be home for half the week. my nephew sent me a flat stanley project, so we will take a day with the kids up to Corwallis’s Cave and take pics, by the big monument, too.
so another opportunity for creativity, but not much for writing…maybe next week….

cookies, still have dough to turn into cookies, but i completed 2 trays worth!

    flat stanley, check

and i am down to the last 9 pages of edits in my book, during a few whirlwind weeks. that’s right, more than mayhem, full blown whirlwind –

this week entails, burnt from road trip, more hours at new job, appts for 2 kids and me, and i don’t even know what else at the moment. oh yeah, my birthday on fri, for which i am working until 8pm. i hope i can find a little quiet to knock out a few more pages and some blog posts.

  3. Happy New Year everyone! It’s back to work/school for me and the girls after having two weeks off, so that in itself will be a bit of an adjustment! My goal for this year, if nothing else, is to participate in Project 365, posting 365 (or since it’s leap year, 366) new photos on my blog this year. Doubtful it’ll be one a day given my crazy world, but I’m hopeful to at least hit the mark even if I’m posting several pictures in one post a couple times a week. First one went up yesterday! http://happyshackdesigns.blogspot.com/2012/01/happy-new-year-and-365-days-project.html

  4. Happy New Year!
I’m committing to daily drawing this year, and seeing where that takes me. I’ll post a drawing everyday on my blog, even if it sucks.

So this week, one drawing a day! That’s enough commitment for now.
