Whether you’re a professional painter, an unpublished novelist, a collage artist, photographer, or musician, the work you love isn’t a “hobby.” It’s the way you make sense of the world.
Given the challenges of daily life with children, a home, and perhaps a paying job, managing any kind of consistency in your creative work — or even the occasional creative binge — is often elusive. Creativity gets dropped to the bottom of the list, or lopped off altogether.
Understandably, sometimes it feels like combining motherhood and creative work is an impossible proposition.
Of course it’s not impossible — just difficult, at times. For me and many others, turning dreams into reality is easier with a group of supportive friends watching your back. We benefit from a network of women who share similar challenges and success. Checking in regularly, and seeing the progress that others are making, is inspirational food for the creative soul. To facilitate those truths, I started this blog in January 2008 to support my fellow creatives.
During a collection of major life transitions, I took a two-year hiatus from the blog. In June 2017, I brushed off the dust and restarted this little gem. We still have 16,000+ e-mail subscribers!
I’m a certified creativity coach, writer and editor, and mother of five children ages 27 through 9. (My oldest son, Russell, is a professional musician, as is my next oldest, Matthew.) My short e-book, written specifically for creative mothers with young children, is available here.
In 2017, my life-design workbook, Life By Design: 52 Lists, Questions, and Inspirations for Finding Your Happiness, was published by Castle Point Books, an imprint of St. Martin’s Press. Built on a framework of design thinking, Life By Design is a practical workbook that guides you through applying principles of design to intentional life choices. From career to love to extracurricular pursuits, the exercises in this book help you decide how to innovate and iterate your way to a well-lived life.
This illustrated journal was followed by The Power of Quiet: An Inspirational Journal for Introverts, and Press Pause: A Journal for Self-Care, Intention, and Slowing Down.

I love this and I will be visiting more often! Thank you for blogging. I hope you can take the time and read my blog if possible. I created the blog about a month ago and I relate so much to what you wrote about being a creative mom how our creativity gets put at the bottom of the list! I always try to use what I believe to be my creative talents on a day to day basis.. as a tool to keep myself sane and to show my son that things don’t always have to be so glum and boring!

Thanks for stopping by! The right brushes depend so much on the medium you’re using and what you’re trying to accomplish (as well as your budget). I recommend a trip to your local art store to talk to a knowledgeable salesperson about what you’re looking for.

Well I got to 32000 words, so not quite the 50k but still I was pleased with my first attempt in between looking after the little man and the big man fully into Ironman training! I’m now aiming to get my young adult fiction book finished by my wedding – 30 March as I have 2 nieces from the UK coming over who are avid readers and I thought they’d be good critiques :-).

I thing the idea of this blog is great! I am also a mom with creative ideas and I am glad to find this blog.
I am very happy that I stumbled across this blog. I am a single mother of two and dabble in pretty much any creative persuit I can sink my teeth in. I write, I paint, I do wood and stone carvings, and will be trying my hand at pottery soon. I believe that being creative helps me to keep my sanity.

I just found this site, too. I’m finally at a place in my life where I feel the courage to truly try to push myself as an artist yet I’m also feeling a ‘baby freakout’! The timing is terrible and seems impossible. I’ll be 38 soon and my boyfriend has no interest in more kids (he has 2 from a previous marriage- they are grown). I thought I was okay with not having kids and have been feeling fired up to make this big life transition (quitting my corporate day job and going for it with making art the focus of my life). I almost wonder if it’s not self-sabotage, yet I’ve been crying my eyes out. I just don’t see how it’s possible. I’m glad to see you have created this blog because women-creatives need this support.
What a difficult place, Julie. My heart goes out to you. I’m sure you already know (at least intellectually) that many, many women have fabulously satisfying lives without kids. And when you do have a few of them, it’s hard not to see all of the amazing things that your childless counterparts are doing — enjoying major creative successes, traveling, living with freedom. Maybe it’s just a grass-is-always greener thing that is part of the human condition. I have just found this blog and as a mother of 2 children (one with ADHD and one with Autism) I have ignored my creative voice for many years now in an attempt to put their needs first. I am so happy to have recently re-discovered my creative side but it is a daily battle against everything you speak of in your blog. However, you have lifted my spirit and re-inspired me! I have just begun a new journey as a facepainter and have started a blog of my attempts to move from beginner to professional (but suspect it will develop into so much more as the artist within me fights to be seen and heard). So thank you. What a lovely start to my day to have found this blog and so many other creative Mums.

Before I saw the trailer for Lost in Living I struggled, suppressing my need, my constant sense of urgency to make art, because i knew of no other moms that shared my innate NEED to make art…and so i continued in my silence… “lost in living”….a tired mother. i stumbled on this site just today and love the idea of being part of a circle of moms who know how i FEEL! i look forward to having a virtual back up team when i’m in the midst of a mommy breakdown and haven’t made art in weeks! Confession: I nearly shed a tear when I found this website. My fiance and I have struck out on the Big Quest to build our own life and family, and since we’re both extremely creative, adventurous people, one of the things that terrifies me is the thought of that ending when we add to our little family. Even NOW it’s difficult to manage sometimes.

So excited to find this blog. Thank you. Am trying to add more creativity to my families everyday life. I was an art teacher for many years and since marrying and moving countries and having children it seems, like most I am sure that art took a back seat. . . Even though I love it so much, it makes me immensely happy!! I hope to use this site and other resources to integrate creativity readily into our daily lives.
Have recently started to try and make art and creativity part of our families everyday life. I was an art teacher for many years before getting married, moving countries and starting a family, cooking became my only creative outlet but after a few creative tasks here and there I have begun to remember how important art and creativity is to me and hope to instil that in my own children! Hopefully with a bit of help from this site it can become a reality.

Although my son is grown, and I worked outside of the home as a teacher, I always had the yearning to create. I worked in many mediums whenever I could squeeze it in. Hi Miranda. Thank you for this wonderful blog! No doubt that you have heard this before (maybe not these words exactly) but you are the first person that I have come across that is rowing in the dream boat which I am still trying to build. I can’t lie but it constantly feels as though the tide is too high but I have always put it down to having to do it on my own and unfortunately I never seem to know where to start which is sort of why I had started my first ever blog a couple of days ago. I had started writing a book a few years ago about how life experiences had morphed me into what I call a Brown Brit but unfortunately my self-belief often makes me stop writing, yet I will happily craft until the cows come home and nothing can obstruct that unless it’s a new idea. Absolutely love this site! I have been wired with tons of artistic outlets I love to enjoy, but just don’t have the time to. From playing the piano, painting, crafts to cooking and I just picked up sewing, I’m glad I found this community of people to help me to act on my inspirations!
